Hope for Korah

HAVE A RICE DAY TODAY! Join us, where ever you are, for a simple bowl of rice  and read "A Mother's Heart" story.   Today is International Family Day and Hunger Response International is featuring the following article on a Korah family's struggle with poverty and how their life is changing.   We can make a difference as we pause together and think about the billion people in this world who are malnourished and hungry because of poverty. You can also download a pdf copy of this article at Hunger Response International (HRI) website.  HRI is also accepting donations and 100% of what they receive will be used towards helping a Korah family.

You may have read in my previous posts (see below) how God has moved on the hearts of many to help  provide beds and mattresses to over 60 people who are living in utter destitution in a specific leper compound in Korah. It was such a privilege and a joy to be there in person and witness this outpouring of love. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED TO MAKE THIS DAY POSSIBLE! On March 10 th of this year I shared with you one of the most difficult moments of my January trip to Korah; when I entered a compound where many lepers and families were living in horrific conditions and in desperate need of beds.    Our p rayers were answered wi thin a few short weeks when many of you came together, desiring to make a difference in this community and enough funds were raised to purchase all of the needed beds.     A number of the lepers sleeping on makeshift beds in the compound,  the elder on the right sleeps on the floor. So, in contrast to January, a highlight of my April trip was returning back to this  same compound with the beds, mattresses, blankets, sheets and pillows that God has provided through you: Shortly after arriving in Korah, I accompanied the Great Hope Charities leaders as we went door to door throughout the compound reassessing each home to determine exactly what was needed in each dwelling.  W...

We had an amazing Saturday in Korah, as 150 children showed up for the HFK Brother Sister Friend Party!  Many of the children received their cards and notes from friends in Canada and the U.S. while many more new children filled out the BSF Information Card in hopes of soon being matched with their own friend.  All of the Great Hope Charities leaders and volunteers were helping to translate the cards from English to Amharic and in turn, helped to write cards in English to be sent back to America.  All the while Patty, Lisa and Jeiccy were working to help children make their own cards to send to their BSF.  All of this took quite some time and we ended the party in the church with soda, cookies and party-favours.... overall it was an A+ day!!   You can read more and check out lots of photos on the HFK Facebook page (you don't need Facebook to access it.)   As it takes a long time to upload photos when in Ethiopia, I have instead poste...

My bags are packed and I am ready to go.... leaving for Ethiopia in a few hours - 5 am start time!  Thank you to so many who have been praying for us as we are preparing for this trip and for supporting Hope for Korah and the bed initiative!!   Please continue to keep us in your prayers over these next few weeks.  I am excited to see how everything unfolds and if you would like to keep updated we will be posting on the Hope for Korah Facebook Page   www.facebook.com/hopeforkorah  .  When in Ethiopia, I find our Facebook page much easier to post on (vs. this blog), so that is where you will find our updates for the next few weeks! Sometimes when we pray, God’s answer is to wait a while longer.  Other times His answer is immediate and is more than what we ask for…today is one of those days!!  Overnight - God has provided more than what I had hoped to dream for – at this time we are able to purchase over 60 BEDS and climbing!!! When I left that compound in February, my heart was broken the need was so great – much bigger than me!!  As I prayed, all I could think of was how can we provide some dignity and hope to these precious people. Couldn't we at least provide some beds? When speaking with the leaders of Great Hope Charities we came up with a number for that compound - 30 to 40 beds. But obviously God had different plans – greater plans!  Of course that shouldn’t surprise me. He sees much more than those living in the compound that I wrote about… where ever one turns in Korah, the need is overwhelming and I believe His heart breaks for each person living there.
