A leper community of up to 130,000 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
God led us to this destitute community named Korah, where His precious children are living in extreme poverty; in garbage dumps and makeshift homes filled with darkness. The community is consumed with poverty, where families are broken through illness, death and persecution.

Changing Lives, Empowering Families! When I think of these words, I think of Serkalem. The contrast of her life today compared to when I first met her is nothing short of unbelievable. She is truly an example of someone whose spirit was trapped in the unrelenting grip of poverty and whose life has been dramatically transformed because someone else decided to...

November is Hope for Korah's fundraising month & we are asking you to join us as we care for the destitute - the elderly lepers, widows, children & families of Korah. In preparing for 2013, our goal is $75,000. Any gift great or small will help loosen the yoke of poverty in Korah. Please read recent post STAND WITH KORAH.
I will always remember the day I met Serkalem. She was lying, deathly sick in bed, hardly able to move with a fussing baby latching lethargically onto her breast. Concerned for her life and worried that her children may soon be orphans, the leaders brought me to her home. Her husband was dead and she was left alone; completely destitute, with three young children. That week she had been poisoned by food she had eaten and scavenged from the city garbage dump. Her children’s faces were blank, empty and hopeless. Their living conditions were horrendous. Their home reminded me of a prison cell; filthy, no window, one broken down tin door that could not fully open to let in light because of the makeshift bed that filled their living space. A family of four, living in this spec of a room, it was heart breaking to say the least.
Through circumstances that I can only attribute to God’s intervention, He immediately provided a sponsor – that very night! When hearing her story, Patty (who happened to be

Here are just a few of the ways we are
"Working Together for Hope"
Keeping families healthy and
keeping families together!
Together, through monthly sponsorship we are able to take action towards breaking the cycle of extreme poverty for families living in Korah. Sponsorship provides an opportunity for families to move out of this critical state through better living conditions, food, healthcare, education, community meetings, bible study and relationship. The goal is for families to become involved with income generation & community development projects which promote self-empowerment, giving back to their community and leading to healthy, stable and self-sustainable families. Giving Hope & a Future - Jeremiah 29:11
“Crisis Intervention” Program
The first of its kind in Korah, this ‘Crisis Intervention’ Program serves a specialized breakfast cereal called Berta which is designed specifically for malnourished children. For many it is their largest meal of the day. Most families in Korah only eat 1-2 times per day and the quality of food is extremely poor, often scavenged from the city garbage dump. As a result, the boys and girls living in Korah are underweight and their families malnourished. It is common for these children to have poor participation (some actually fainting) in school because they have not eaten. Providing Berta, provides hope and a future; one cannot concentrate in school on an empty stomach.
The Elders' Home for Lepers
Loving the Least of These
Great Hope Charities has been serving the elderly lepers of Korah for numbers of years. At their request, in April 2012 we opened the ‘Elders’ Home’ providing a safe, loving home for those who have been forgotten & rejected because of their disease.
Brother Sister Friend Program
Globally connecting hundreds of boys & girls of all ages to a friend their own age, learning to understand their needs and developing a relationship through letters, cards and photos. “I AM NOT FORGOTTEN! Someone knows my name!”
In October 2012 we leased this beautiful compound to house our ‘Income Generation Project’ which will provide families an opportunity to learn and upgrade weaving, jewellery making, basketry and sewing skills. Products will be available for purchase in 2013.

I often think back to our first visit to Korah when we stumbled through its’ broken streets and stooped through a dingy doorway into the blackness of a small, dirt floor hovel and met a mother, utterly destitute and crippled, with three children. They had no food, no blanket or bed. This must surely grieve God. That day changed our lives and commenced us on the amazing journey of Hope for Korah.
Much has happened since then; numerous doors have opened, allowing for us to stand in support of this mother and many others who are needy and suffering in Korah. We believe God has a vision for Korah that is beyond what any of us could or can imagine.
“For the Lord is high above the nations;
his glory is higher than the heavens.
Who can be compared with the LORD our God,
who is enthroned on high?
He stoops to look down on heaven and on earth.
He lifts the poor from the dust and the needy from the garbage dump.”
Psalm 113: 4 - 7 NLT
Now we would like to invite you to join us,
STAND WITH KORAH
Over the next few weeks, we will be highlighting various Korah stories through this blog and our Facebook page. You will see a glimpse of just a few of the ways God is using Hope for Korah to lift the poor and needy from the garbage dump. For years they have depended on discarded trash for survival, but now many are learning about a God in Heaven who has not forgotten them, but loves them and knows them by name. He is lifting them up and is bringing others to stand alongside them. We invite you to be one of those people. Hope for Korah has designated November as its fundraising month and our goal is to raise $75,000. Any gift, great or small, is important and will help loosen the yoke of poverty in Korah.
We thank you for prayerfully considering how
YOU could STAND WITH KORAH.
