A Taste of Ethiopia - with Berhanu & Mastee in Oregon

Last weekend we took a road trip to Oregon and had the privilege of spending time with our dear brothers from Korah - Berhanu and Mastee and the Cornish family!  Mastee and newlyweds; Berhanu and Emily are in the U.S. for a few weeks visiting and speaking in the Oregon area.  As many of you know, Berhanu works with Great Hope Charities and helps to oversee our Hope for Korah Programs in Ethiopia.

Not only was it a 'surreal' blessing to see them all in our part of the world, but we also had the rare opportunity to be treated to an authentic Ethiopian dinner and coffee ceremony prepared by non-other; Mastee and Berhanu - two master chefs! So delicious!!

For those of you living in the Lower Mainland, B.C.
and in Northern Washington state - we have an unexpected surprise;

YOU CAN
COME OUT AND MEET
BERHANU & EMILY
AND HEAR MORE ABOUT THEIR MINISTRY IN KORAH
 ON THURSDAY AUGUST 23RD, 7:30 P.M.
WE ARE HAVING AN INFORMAL GATHERING AT
HOMESTEAD GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB
 115 E. HOMESTEAD BLVD.
LYNDEN, WA.

WE HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!!

P.S. Be sure to scroll to the bottom to view a short video clip on how to make Ethiopian shiro - Mastee Style!

This is such a different kitchen from in Korah...
it is so wonderful, yet so hard to wrap one's head around...

 Berhanu making 'Beef Tibs'

Mastee cooking up some cabbage and vegetables...

Berhanu and Weoldu - Ready for a Party!!

Nick & Berhanu - a trial run at making Ethiopian coffee in Oregon...
YES - SUCCESS!!!

Maste and Berhanu - Preparing an
'ETHIOPIAN COFFEE CEREMONY'
while the guests watch on...

Ah! This is reminiscent of the many wonderful cups of 'buna'
we have been so graciously served in Korah....

It is always a pleasure for me to sit down and visit with Jegioh.
She makes the absolute best coffee ever!
Here we are once again; enjoying a cup of 'buna'
skillfully prepared and poured by Shebree!

Yes, you may have guessed... I am missing Korah....

Before I close; here is a one minute video clip of Mastee
showing us how to make authentic Ethiopian Shiro - YUM!!!
This is definitely my favorite Ethiopian dish, served with injera of course!

Lastly - a 20 second clip, demonstrating
a 'pinch' of Berbere (hot peppery spice)
for the North American palate - I can't imagine
how much is needed to satisfy the 'hot' Ethiopian palate!!

MEULKAM MEGEB!!!!
(Bon Appetit!)

  1. I have never tried Shiro, but would love to! My husband and I experiment with Ethiopian dishes- our most recent is lentil stew. Over injera, of course. Delicious! Loved the videos!
